Our History
For 20 years, Progress ShareFile software has helped customers build success in their own business. From our humble beginnings as a B2B file sharing solution to the AI-powered document collaboration and automated workflow offering it is today, our ShareFile’s journey reflects a trajectory from niche business solution to global enterprise platform. Our path has been marked by innovation, strategic acquisitions and a continued emphasis on secure, workflow-driven file sharing.
2005
ShareFile was founded by Jesse Lipson in Raleigh, NC, as a secure and client-oriented web-based file sharing solution. The platform was positioned as an alternative to FTP sites and quickly gained traction among enterprise users.
2011
By 2011, there were 3 million ShareFile users in over 100 countries, and the company earned a place on the Inc. 500 list of Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2010 and 2011.

2012
In 2012, ShareFile acquired Podio, a tool designed to help users build custom solutions to manage projects, data, workflows and collaboration. The strategic acquisition was a pivotal moment that allowed the organization to build out the portfolio, offering customers a more comprehensive suite of tools for businesses with needs for both file management and team collaboration.
2014
The ShareFile office in Raleigh opened and RightSignature was acquired, empowering our customers with a native e-signature experience within their document workflows.
2023
Cloud Software Group (the result of a Citrix-TIBCO merger) spun ShareFile off as a standalone business unit, allowing it to focus on file-centric workflows and transforming its architecture into a scalable, cloud-native platform. Computerworld named ShareFile a top file-sharing service.
2024
On October 31, 2024, Progress acquired ShareFile to bolster its portfolio with tools that help businesses improve how they serve customers and streamline their operations to drive efficiency, security and compliance. Since the acquisition, the product has become AI-enabled, modernizing document management for regulated industries.
2025
As we celebrate 20 years of innovation, strategic acquisition and a continued emphasis on secure, workflow-driven file sharing, we proudly introduce the new Progress ShareFile brand.
