Accounting hasn’t lost its soul, but the work is changing fast. The qualities that first drew many to the profession still resonate: problem solving, stability, meaningful client impact. Yet the day-to-day reality now lives at the intersection of evolving regulations, heightened client expectations, and a wave of new technology that promises relief if firms can implement it with intention.

That is the story emerging from 311 accounting professionals surveyed in the new State of the Accounting report. The data shows how quickly the profession is changing and why forward‑thinking firms are reassessing their technology, processes and client journey.

These insights point directly to the decisions firms need to make now to stay competitive in 2026. Along the way, you will see how leading firms are rethinking operations, how the industry is shifting beneath the surface, and how a modern workflow platform like ShareFile helps teams close the gaps revealed in the research.

A Profession That Loves the Work, And Feels the Friction

Job satisfaction is remarkably high. Almost every accountant, 98 percent, says they love their work, and 96 percent see themselves as critical advisors, not back-office processors. The profession is evolving toward higher value engagement, and accountants welcome that shift.

But loving the work does not make the work easy. The same report makes it clear that efficiency is where the profession struggles most.

The problem with delivering on client experiences is that 57% of accountants say they can perform their job effectively but not efficiently, often due to technology issues.

This efficiency gap shapes every other trend in the report. It also underscores a deeper truth. Firms cannot deliver exceptional client service if the experience behind the scenes is fragmented, manual, or insecure.

Client Experience: Priority Number One Meets Everyday Reality

Every firm says client service is important. The report quantifies this. Client experience is the top personal priority for 97 percent of accountants and a top organizational priority for 98 percent. Yet only half say delivering a good experience is easy. That disconnect signals opportunity.

Accountants say better client experiences require more personalized service, more time for advisory work and streamlined client collaboration. These are not marketing preferences. They are operational realities.

A whopping 96% say technology is the key to improving the client experience. Yet, many have yet to take full advantage of available tools.

This is where firms have a real opportunity to rethink how client interactions are designed and delivered, and where platforms like Progress ShareFile can make a meaningful difference.

Clients judge firms by how effortless, secure and transparent interactions feel. The way documents are requested, shared, approved and delivered is as much a part of the client experience as the final deliverable itself. Firms that invest in frictionless, client-facing workflows see the return quickly in client satisfaction and retention.
