The Unzip Program and Alternatives

In order to read large files that come through your email, you’ll need to use an unzip program. Whether you’re a Mac or PC user, your operating system likely has a zip program already built in and ready for use. If not, programs that can zip or unzip files are available by download.

If a simple unzipping of a compressed file is all you need, your computer’s default program should be enough. But if you’re transferring large files regularly and want to benefit from additional features and functions, consider using a cloud-based file-sharing software program such as Citrix ShareFile.

More than an unzip program

ShareFile allows you to do more with your file transferring than most zip/unzip programs in these ways.

1. Start with mobility. The unzip program on your office computer lets you zip and unzip files from that computer only. That’s fine when you’re at work, but how often are you away from your desk and want to send or open a zip file? ShareFile lets you send and receive large documents from your tablet or smartphone, syncing files across devices, no matter where you are.

1. Next, think of file security. Standard zip programs sometimes use basic safety measures, leaving your files vulnerable to interception. Plus, zip files are saved to hard drives that are subject to data crashes or spyware. ShareFile uses the highest level of encryption available in addition to multi-factor authentication, regular backups to secure datacenters and detailed records of document changes that include full access to previous versions.

2. Now, consider file size. Although zipping files makes them more manageable for transfer, most email systems still place size restrictions on sent files. With ShareFile it's easy to send large files, you can upload an unlimited number of documents to our storage space and send up to 100 GB at a time.

3. What about ease of use? Unzip programs come with a list of steps you must navigate before accessing your document. In contrast, sending large files with ShareFile is as easy as sending an email.

4. Don’t forget customer service. Encountering a problem opening a file with your zip program may just leave you out of luck. ShareFile staffs a customer support team 24/7 just for you.

5. And then there’s compatibility. PC users and Mac users can sometimes run into problems sharing zipped files with one another and must take an extra step to make them viewable. However, as long as you can access the Internet, it doesn’t matter what kind of system you use with ShareFile.

But is file sharing software worth the cost?

With just over half of U.S. businesses now using cloud computing, one must wonder, why have more not taken the plunge? In many cases, the answer to this question comes down to cost. What many businesses fail to realize, however, is that the convenience and security that a cloud-based file sharing system lends their company can end up saving them significant money in the long run.

For instance, on average enterprises spend $551,000 to recover from a security breach and small businesses spend around $38,000—both costing thousands of dollars more than most file sharing software.

So how much does file sharing software cost, anyway?

FileShare has several plans to choose from, all catering to businesses of different sizes and file sharing needs.

An article published by Forbes says, "For a smaller web company, the cloud is not only cheaper, it's really the only option. As companies grow, the question of spikes and general usage becomes extremely difficult to predict. You basically have two options, use your own data center, or someone else's."

So, while a basic unzip program may work for businesses who are only interested in basic file sharing services, most businesses will benefit tremendously from file sharing software. Sign up for a free, no obligation 30-day trial today!
