Safeguarding protected health information (PHI) has taken on a new urgency in recent weeks with news of data breaches affecting hundreds of thousands of patient records coupled with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, which has made paperless patient records a reality.
Back in January of this year, Congress passed the Omnibus Final Rule, which included a new Security Rule, to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA. These new measures took effect in September, and businesses that interact with and transmit PHI are now subject to enhanced rules and penalties for noncompliance with the law.
To address these new rules and to further reduce the risk associated with a breach of PHI, we’re introducing the ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare, a secure enclave within a private cloud where our customers who use ShareFile to upload and share PHI will have that data processed and stored. This private cloud hosts multiple customers, but it is dedicated for only those customers in industries that process or store PHI, such as healthcare, insurance and financial services.
With the ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare, we’ve taken extra steps to comply with the HIPAA Security Rule. We even had our systems assessed by an independent, third-party security consulting firm, Sword & Shield Enterprise Security, Inc., to make sure we’re supporting our customers’ efforts to meet HIPAA regulations.
All ShareFile customers who use ShareFile to transmit and process PHI are eligible to use the ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare, but to participate you must sign and submit an updated Business Associate Agreement (BAA). If you aren’t sure whether or not you need to sign a BAA, check out our FAQ on the ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare for additional information.
We strive to be customer-focused in all areas of what we do, and the ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare is no different. It’s here to make sure that ShareFile supports the regulatory needs of our healthcare customers and those customers in other industries that may work with healthcare information.
