Jesse Lipson recently sat down to talk with Ben Kepes, a technology evangelist, investor, commentator and business adviser. Jesse spent time talking about organizational and user needs around data, and what this means in terms of product design. He also shared his model for data needs in business, based on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

The stages of Jesse’s Data Hierarchy of Needs, in ascending order of value, are:

  • Creation of data
  • Storage of that data
  • Accessing of data in a timely manner
  • Searching of data
  • Discovery of relevant and contextual data
  • Drawing insight from relevant data
