How to be productive instead of busy

Do your to-do lists get longer as the days get shorter? Between office tasks, upcoming holidays, family obligations, and possibly owning your own business, you are definitely busy. But are actually you productive?

You might be “busy” instead of productive if the following sounds familiar:

  1. You get less done despite “furious” multitasking and multiple devices.
  2. Your day is filled with constant distractions. And you’re even looking for distractions like social media that will help you procrastinate on real work.
  3. You start the day with no committed daily action plan. (Or maybe your action plan is slaughtered in the first 15 minutes of the day.)

Being busy is just doing stuff at the office; being productive is specifically working on things that will move the company ahead. To run and grow a profitable business, each owner needs to figure out how to be productive, not just settle for being busy.

When it comes to increasing our own productivity, we are our worst enemies. We continue to do things wrong or inefficiently even though we know better. As Albert Einstein, this is the definition of insanity that we “keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect to get different results!”

Tomorrow, take the challenge to write down every tasks and the length of time it took you to complete the work. Take notes of your schedule, your energy level, and whether you were actually able to follow a task to completion. Then use this list of tips and tricks to make productivity improvements. You’ll probably notice an increase in personal energy and process.
