How to collaborate with clients from the basketball stands
Unless you don’t have a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop (are you living in the stone age?), you likely spend at least some time running your business outside of the office. I’m not a business owner, but I often work from the basketball court sidelines and answer urgent emails while out at dinner with friends. I’ve also been known to frequent the local coffee shop a block from our Raleigh office. No matter where I work, whether from my home office or my smart phone at the park, I make sure that my technology is up to snuff.
24% of U.S. workers spent at least some time working from home in 2015.
I use the cloud to store all of my files, which means I can grab them anywhere at any time without eating up storage or jeopardizing sensitive information (that I might lose). Passwords, documents on future product releases, and contact information are safely stored in my ShareFile account, which is protected by bank-level security and double authentication. Using a secure cloud can eliminate your worries about security and can allow you to manage your clients without tying you to your desk.
As of January 2016, U.S. employees spent between 50-60% of their time working away from their desks.
I make sure that I’m open to remote communication to ensure that my colleagues know my work is still important, even when I’m not within four walls. I can send a file through the ShareFile mobile app or I can drop a secure link in Slack, the communication tool my team uses. If my colleague Caroline needs a document while I’m cheering on my seven-year-old’s basketball team, I can grab a ShareFile link & drop a secure link in a text message too. Easy!
I also make sure that all of my calendars are synced. This way I never miss a meeting or invitation, but I can also set clear expectations about the workload I’m willing to carry when I’m away from my desk. On days where I need to be head-down and uninterrupted, I’ve been known to block my entire day with “No, shan’t” as the meeting title (bonus points if you can name the movie that quote is from!). But my coworkers also know that if my time is open, they can send me a meeting invite I will get immediately on my phone.
Being able to work remotely with flexible hours gives me (and my family) an incredible work-life balance. I’m able to show my colleagues how important they are to me without missing a beat of my little one’s lives. I’m so thankful for the tools that allow me to do both.
