Ashton Smith, Project Manager on the Facilities and Operations team, describes the requirements for successful growth in this way, “I think flexibility to deal with changes and preparedness are important. After all, things are changing all the time, and it’s important to keep a cool head in those situations. But I think the most important requirement is good communication skills. A team like this is so dependent on each member that it’s critical for us to keep open lines of communication – and for people to be willing to step up and lend a hand when it’s needed.”

Of course, growing from under 80 employees to over 200 in just over a year and a half can present its challenges. Ashton mentions “keeping up with the sheer volume of new hires and ensuring that we’re maintaining our sense of company culture” as a couple of examples. Implementing processes and procedures that ensure all departments are communicating and providing feedback about what is going well and what needs improvement are keys to growing successfully. As far as culture is concerned, the fantastic news is that ShareFile’s culture was so similar to the culture at Citrix prior to the acquisition that the fit has been fairly seamless. We still ride scooters around the office and play ping pong, pool or foosball during our breaks, while our snack and fruit vendors have most definitely increased the volume of their deliveries.

Having processes across company departments ensures that teams do not become “siloed.” When an organization grows like ShareFile has, groups can quickly become less effective because of inadequate collaboration between teams. A strong op team is the glue and true facilitator of interdepartmental projects and production.

“My favorite part of being on the Ops team is my involvement on some level with every department. In this role there is so much opportunity to work cross-functionally, and that keeps every day interesting because we’re learning something new all the time!,” says Ashton.

Sarah: Can you tell me about your role at ShareFile and how it has changed with the company’s growth?

Nate: I joined ShareFile in fall of 2007 as Vice President of Operations. At the time, we were a company of four employees, so I was responsible for a variety of things, from office management to database design and maintenance. Every employee fielded customer phone calls, and over time we built dedicated teams for account management and customer support. Today, I oversee these teams.

Sarah: Did you have expectations for where the company would be in 2012?

Nate: In my first conversations with Jesse (Lipson, ShareFile founder), he expected to grow the company to seven to nine employees over three to five years. I thought that was pretty conservative, and I expected we could reach twenty employees in that time, which I guess was pretty conservative, too. At almost five years out, we now have 185 employees.

Sarah: How has that growth affected the company’s culture?

Nate: Maintaining consistent company culture has been critical to our success. Our team has a more diverse skill set now, but we still have a culture that’s fun and also very professional. We have always been a customer-centric company, and the needs of our customers continue to shape our development priorities.

Even our start-up background has helped us transition to part of a larger company. As a boot-strapped company, we focused on efficiency. With the resources that we have now, we can bring our service to more companies while maintaining the same lean, results-driven process.

Sarah: What are some of the challenges that you have encountered as a result of ShareFile’s rapid growth?

Nate: It becomes much more difficult to know everyone on the team as we continue to grow. In the early days, we would all walk to a restaurant together and get lunch during staff meetings. Today, all-hands meetings are shared over GoToMeeting, because the company does not fit into one room. I encourage everyone to make an effort to get to know as many coworkers as possible – at least get to know their names.  It’s a small thing, but I think it makes a big difference.

There has been lots of chatter about where the new office location will be, but the wait is finally over. The new facility (just announced today) will be located in a space in the warehouse district of downtown Raleigh. The 130,000 square-foot facility will retain the essence of the original warehouse environment while being outfitted with the latest technology to facilitate collaboration and teamwork.

We are thrilled that Citrix has chosen to expand ShareFile facilities in one of the fastest growing U.S. cities. The move to downtown Raleigh is exciting for us, and we are delighted to remain in such a well-established tech community. After all, Raleigh is indeed a great place to work and live!

So you’re probably wondering what’s next for ShareFile after the Citrix acquisition, right?  Well, “We’ve added 10 or so people since the acquisition, and we’re looking to add 100 people next year,” says Jesse Lipson, VP and GM of Data Sharing at Citrix.  Currently with just over 100 employees, we’re looking to have around 200 in the next year.  With the addition of such a great number of employees, we’re searching for a new space in Raleigh. And the search continues.
