ShareFile has a history of working to fight hunger. In this tradition, seven Citrix ShareFile employees spent the day packing cucumbers, pretzels, and rice for those in need. We enjoyed stepping out from behind our computers and phones to get our hands dirty for others.
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina serves Raleigh and the surrounding areas, providing food to a network of organizations working in the community to reach those in need. We spent the morning sorting and bagging 5-pound bags from pallets of donated cucumbers to be distributed through the network.
While most people probably just think of dry goods when they think of food donations, the Food Bank seeks to provide fresh options whenever possible. Without volunteers, donated produce may not make it to the families who can benefit from it before it spoils.
In the afternoon, we labeled donated bags of pretzels and bagged rice into portions usable by those who frequent the Food Bank’s partners for assistance. By leveraging volunteers, the Food Bank of CENC is able to purchase and receive food in bulk to provide even more food for those who need it.
The rewarding part about this serving opportunity was realizing just how many families would benefit from our work. Each bag we filled would go to another family who could use the assistance. Through our efforts and the efforts of other volunteers and staff, the food we packaged would be on the shelves—and out the doors in the hands of those who need it—by the next day.
