Chicago Workshift

Adventures in workshifting: Chicago edition

I have worked for Citrix ShareFile as a remote employee for a little over a year. Initially, it took me some time to adjust to my new working environment. Although I had previous workshiftingexperience, my co-workers had never been in a separate location. As I’ve adjusted to workshifting, I’ve come to understand myself better as an employee and am continually learning how my environment affects creativity and productivity. Here are a few of the lessons I’ve picked up along the way.

Working from home introduced me to a new set of variables. While I am no longer sidetracked by conversations with those sitting around me, my distractions now largely consist of clutter, dirty dishes and laundry (and perhaps loving on my pets while they sleep the day away)! I do my best to keep my environment clean and visually pleasing. As a creative, my environment can either inspire or kill productivity.

I don’t like to stay in one place. Co-workers who I meet with frequently via GoToMeeting can attest to this statement. I’m not always comfortable sitting in the same location every day, so it’s important for me to be able to change it up. I have my main desk, but I also utilize a large, comfy chair in my bedroom, the dining room table and on nice days, the patio.

Establishing a (loose) routine helps me stay on task. Knowing what the day holds and planning accordingly is one of the most important things I do. For example, on Tuesdays my day “at the office” starts earlier than normal to incorporate a 10 am personal training session at the gym. I also write a list of what is going on each day. This keeps me on task, and it is very therapeutic to have something to cross off the list (come on, you know you do it too!).

Shameless ShareFile plug. Get ready for it… ShareFile absolutely makes working away from the team easier! Lately the versioning feature has been hugely beneficial to me. We’re doing a massive update of our marketing materials and the fact that ShareFile saves all the previous versions of files is great. I’ve been able to look at previous versions to make sure we’re up to date, delete the ones we don’t need and share the correct files with everyone.

What’s your story… Do you workshift (or want to)? What’s your favorite ShareFile feature? Comment below or tell us about it on Facebook
